Nonwoven Fabrics (Material Field)

gIt is said that the origins of nonwoven fabric can be traced to nomadic herdsmen who lived in the Himayalan mountains of Tibet. They discovered the natural felt snarl of the sheep in their care. They then set about trying to duplicate this fabric themselves.h

There are three different methods of manufacture when it comes to nonwoven fabrics: the gDry Laidh, the gWet Laidh and the gSpunbondedh.

œDry-Laid
Uses a card during the spinning process - laminated sheets made of fibers are suspended in the air.. Then a one- or multiple-stage process causes the fibers to bond together and the result is nonwoven fabric.

œ Wet-Laid
Using the pulp paper method, the fibers are dispersed in the water and are then stacked in sheets. Then a one- or multiple-stage process causes the fibers to bond together and the result is nonwoven fabric.

œ Spunbonded
Following the melting or dissolving of the polymer, the spun fibers collect and are laminated onto the screen. Then a one- or multiple-stage process causes the fibers to bond together and the result is nonwoven fabric.
The process of nonwoven fabric varies with the bonding process.

Typical examples of the production processes using the gDry-Laidh method are outlined as follows:

This nonwoven fabric was made by laminated bonded fibers that using chemicals such as solvents and bonding agents.

Here the fibers are fused together through the application of heat or ultrasound waves. The heat processing stage can take place both under pressurized and non-pressurized conditions. Again, the fibers bond, either partially or entirely, to form nonwoven fabric.
The repeated punching action of the metallic needle pulls the bunches of fibers together. The interlaced fibers bond to form nonwoven fabric.
